Google let you find a page on the internet. Spotify lets you get a song. Netflix lets you get a movie. Simple enough — but each of those jobs had a previous owner, and the previous owner had one before that.

Music: CD, then MP3, then iTunes, then Spotify. Video: DVD, then Netflix. Search: Yahoo’s directory, then Google. Each step did the same job the last one did — get you the song, find you the page — a little better, a little cheaper, a little less tied to a physical thing you had to own or a person who had to sort it by hand.


Why the Job Keeps Changing Hands

The thing being replaced each time isn’t the song or the page. It’s whoever sits between you and it, deciding on your behalf how you’ll get it — the resolver, in this series’ terms, and a Def-Push one every time so far. A CD ties the song to a disc. An MP3 frees the song from the disc but still ties it to a file you have to store. iTunes lets you buy the one song instead of the whole album. Spotify drops ownership entirely — you’re not buying a file anymore, you’re renting access to all of them.

Yahoo’s directory answered “where is this page” with human editors sorting links by hand — a job that couldn’t scale as fast as the internet grew. Google answered it by deriving relevance from the link structure the web already had, no editor required.

DVD rental answered “how do I watch this” with a shop full of discs and a return date. Netflix answered it by skipping the disc and the shop, once the network got fast enough to stream instead of download.

Every one of these upgrades was the same move: whoever built the new resolver got there by noticing that streaming, bandwidth, or storage had quietly gotten cheap enough to remove a step nobody needed anymore.


Why the New One Eventually Gets Replaced Too

None of these companies stayed the final answer. iTunes got replaced by Spotify. DVD rental got replaced by Netflix, and Netflix now competes with three other streaming services doing the same job. Every one of them was a Def-Push resolver — a company deciding, on its own schedule, how you’d get your music or find your page or watch your movie, and building the toll booth to control that decision. Whoever owns a Def-Push resolver is sitting on something profitable, and profitable toll booths get exploited eventually — the resolver starts taking its own users for a ride, because the ownership itself was the point all along. That’s what invites the next challenger to build a better one.


I Can Already Drive My Phone Number

Your phone number survives every carrier switch, and it’s never been “disrupted” the way music and video were, because it was never Def-Push to begin with. Number portability was forced by regulation, not built by a company chasing the next iceberg — nobody decided on your behalf how you’d keep your number, the rule simply says you do, regardless of which carrier you’re pulling service from this year. No one collects rent on it, so no one has a reason to let it degrade, and no one has a reason to build a competing version either — there’s no toll booth there to compete with.

That’s the actual difference. Every Def-Push resolver in this post eventually took its users for a ride — the label decided what you could buy, the directory decided what you could find, the rental store decided what was on the shelf, and each one squeezed that decision for profit once it had the chance. The user should drive; the resolver should show the map — not the other way around. My phone number is the one place that’s already true. I choose the carrier. The number comes with me. Nobody else was ever in the driver’s seat.
